RAOUL DUFY (1877-1953) "Let him succeed in making the flickering of a rose garden pass through this continuity of intertwined motifs and Dufy has won his bet: make a fabric, a tapestry, or a ceramic work as one of the ways of appearing a light scattered in the transparent thickness of the material. Some fabrics that have bitten golden tints, such as the silk crepes of the 1920s, show a kind of latent light, grained in the black and gold of the ceremonial drapes. Others prefer pink or light green for bright skirts. But as the leitmotiv, since the first woods, it is often the black that creates the light of the motif in Dufy." (Extract from the Exhibition Catalogue, Dufy, Le peintre décorateur,
Château de Villeneuve, Vence, 1 July - 30 October 1993, p. 25)
